What is Fallopian Tube Blockage?

Often after a marriage, women have a desire to become a mother. However, for some women this desire is not possible. Infertility can be a challenging journey for many couples seeking to start a family. One important common cause of infertility in women is bilateral tubal blockage, a condition where both fallopian tubes are obstructed, hindering the natural process of conception.

Bilateral tubal blockage, also known as bilateral tubal occlusion, refers to the obstruction of both fallopian tubes, the slender tube that play a vital role in facilitating the union of egg and sperm. These tubes serve as the channel for the egg's journey from the ovary to the uterus, and it is the site where fertilization typically occurs. When both fallopian tubes are obstructed, the natural process of conception is delayed, making it challenging for the egg and sperm to meet and form a viable embryo.

There are different types of tubal blockages, and they can be categorized based on their location. They are

  • Proximal blockage, when the blockage is close to the uterus.

  • Interstitial blockage, when the blockage lies in the middle of the fallopian tube.

  • Distal blockage, When the blockage occurs near the end of the tube.

Bilateral tubal blockage can occur due to various factors. Some common causes include Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Endometriosis, Previous Surgeries, Ectopic Pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease, such as gonorrhoea or chlamydia, and hydro salpinx, which causes swelling and fluid collection in fallopian tube.

Pelvic inflammatory disease PID is an infection that can develop when sexually transmitted diseases or other infections go untreated. It is typically caused by gonorrhoea or chlamydia. PID causes inflammation near the fallopian tubes, which can lead to the development of scar tissue and blockages.

Endometriosis is when tissue from a woman’s endometrium, the lining of the uterus, begins to grow outside of the uterus on other pelvic organs. During menstruation the endometrium is typically shed and released from a woman’s body as her periods. However, the endometrium tissue that is growing outside of the uterus does not shed like normal tissue. This causes inflammation and can lead to the development of scar tissue. Endometriosis that develops on or near the fallopian tubes may scar or block the tubes, which can cause tubal infertility.

Any Past surgeries for medical problems like uterine fibroids or endometriosis and other types of abdominal surgery may cause scarring, and damage or block fallopian tubes, that affects an egg’s ability to travel through the fallopian tubes.

An ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tubes, rather than in the uterus. The fallopian tubes are small and narrow, and does not have the room it needs to grow for the fertilized egg. This can cause the fallopian tubes to rupture, which is life threatening and also renders the woman infertile. If a doctor identifies an ectopic pregnancy before the fallopian tube ruptures, then surgery can be performed to remove the fertilized egg. Surgery can lead to fallopian tube scarring and sometimes removal.

Tubal ligation is an elective surgery in which a woman decides to have the ends of her fallopian tubes cut or blocked to prevent any future pregnancies. This procedure is sometimes referred to as “having your tubes tied.” Tubal ligation can be reversed in some cases, but it requires additional surgery.

Symptoms Of Tubal Blockage:

Most women with tubal infertility are asymptomatic. Often they don’t realize their fallopian tubes are blocked until they consult a doctor for infertility, though women with extensive tubal damage may experience chronic pelvic pain. This pain might happen regularly, such as around the time of their period, or be constant, irregular periods or heavy bleeding, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and some other symptoms, are nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and difficulty passing urine or bowel movements.
