Understanding Migraine - Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Migraines are more than normal headaches. They're complex neurological events that can trigger intense pain and dramatically impact a person's life. Characterised by severe and pulsating pain, sensitivity to light and sound, and often accompanied by nausea and vomiting, migraines are a widespread but poorly understood condition. Migraines are not ordinary headaches. They involve a cascade of neurological events that trigger intense pain, due to abnormal brain activity that affects the way nerve signals are processed. This activity can lead to changes in blood flow in the brain, causing pain and other symptoms.

Types of Migraine

Migraine is most prominently of two types.

Migraine with aura: Migraine with aura is also known as Classical Migraine. In this type, the attack is usually preceded by an aura (neurological symptoms) like visual disturbance, hemisensory symptoms, hemiparesis, or dysphasis. The discomforting headache may last for 4 to 72 hours.

Migraine without aura: This is the most common variety and it occurs in about 90% of females with migraine. In this type, the headache occurs episodically and is not preceded by an aura. The headache may be caused due to an emotional state, such as stress, euphoria, or any strong light or odor. The headache builds up gradually and is mostly unilateral. The headache is often associated with nausea, vomiting, intolerance to food or strong odors and light.

Triggers and Causes

Migraines can be triggered by a variety of factors, which can vary from person to person. Some common triggers include:

  • Stress: Emotional and physical stress can contribute to migraine onset.

  • Hormonal Changes: Many women experience migraines around their menstrual cycle due to hormonal fluctuations.

  • Dietary Factors: Certain foods and drinks, such as aged cheeses, chocolate, and alcohol, are known to trigger migraines in some people.

  • Environmental Factors: Bright lights, loud noises, strong odors, and changes in weather can trigger migraines.

  • Sleep Disruptions: Irregular sleep patterns and sleep deprivation can increase susceptibility to migraines.

Symptoms and Phases

Migraines typically progress through four distinct phases:

  1. Prodrome: This premonitory phase can occur hours or even days before the actual migraine attack. It might involve subtle changes like mood swings, food cravings, and neck stiffness.

  2. Aura (not always present): Some individuals experience an aura before or during a migraine attack. Auras are reversible neurological symptoms that usually last for around 20 minutes to an hour. They can include visual disturbances, sensory changes, and even difficulty speaking.

  3. Attack: The attack phase is characterized by the intense headache itself. It often occurs on one side of the head and can last from a few hours to a few days. Pain is usually accompanied by sensitivity to light, sound, and sometimes smells, along with nausea and vomiting.

  4. Postdrome: After the attack, individuals often feel drained and exhausted. This phase can involve mood changes, confusion, and fatigue.
